Bhutan has some of the most beautiful treks in the region.  Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek is one beautiful trek you can do.  Dagala thousand lakes trek leads you from the village of Genekha to Chamgang.  You will cross high passes over 4700 meters and pass beautiful shimmering alpine lakes. 

As you trek you will come across several yak herder camps, open grasslands and rhododendron valleys, creating a thrilling and rewarding adventure.

The best time to do Dagala thousand lakes trek is from March to May and from September to November. June, July and August is monsoon season in Bhutan so it will get too wet. December, January and February its too cold for trekking and some of the passes are blocked by heavy snow.

Is this trek physically demanding?

This is a nice trek and fall in the moderate category however, you must be physically fit to do this trek. The highest point on the trek is about 4700 meters. 

Are there tea houses on the trek route?

Its all wilderness and there are no hotels or tea houses on the route. You will sleep in tents.

Day 1: Paro – Thimphu

Upon arrival at Paro International Airport, our guide will greet you with a traditional lucky scarf. Soon after, you will drive to Thimphu. Once you check into your hotel, you will begin exploring the capital by visiting Kuensel Phodrang, Tashichhoe Dzong, and a local craft bazaar.


Day 2: First Trekking Day – Genekha Village to Gur

After breakfast, you will drive to Genekha Village to begin your trek. Along the trail, you can admire a stunning valley view from a large rock roughly three hours into the hike. Another two hours of trekking will bring you to Gur at 4,300 meters. As you explore the pastures and watch yaks grazing, you may find the peaceful scenery refreshing.


Day 3: Second Trekking Day – Gur to Uthso Tsho

Throughout today’s trek, the altitude remains relatively stable, making the hike more manageable. As you walk, you will enjoy striking views of Mount Dagala and Mount Kanchenjunga. There are also herders’ huts along the way where you may rest if needed. Ultimately, your destination is Uthso Tsho, where you will spend the night. This 12-kilometer stretch usually takes around five hours.


Day 4: Rest Day at Uthso Tsho

Today is dedicated to rest and recovery at Uthso Tsho. You can take it easy, enjoy the serene lake surroundings, or simply recharge for the remaining trekking days.


Day 5: Third Trekking Day – Uthso Tsho to Panka

In the morning, the trek resumes with a short climb to a peak reaching 4,720 meters. From there, you will witness breathtaking views of several major Himalayan peaks, including Mount Everest. Alternatively, you may choose to rest or enjoy sightseeing at a lower point of 4,520 meters if you prefer. After completing today’s 8-kilometer trek, you will descend to Panka at 4,050 meters for the night.


Day 6: Final Trekking Day – Talakha to Chamgang

At dawn, the chants of nearby monks may gently wake you. Following breakfast, you will hike down to Chamgang Village, where your car will be waiting to take you back to Thimphu for lunch. Later, you will visit the National Memorial Chorten and Motithang Takin Preserve. After five days of trekking, you can finally relax in a comfortable hotel room tonight.


Day 7: Departure from Paro
