Day 1: Arrival in Paro and Introduction to Bhutan’s History
Welcome to the Land of the Thunder Dragon! Upon arrival in Paro, your guide will warmly receive you at the airport and escort you to your hotel. After checking in, you will begin your cultural journey with a visit to the National Museum, which showcases exquisite Bhutanese artworks and historical artifacts. Next, you will explore Paro Dzong (Rinpung Dzong), beautifully positioned above the river. Afterwards, continue to Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest and most sacred temples. In the evening, you may take a leisurely stroll through Paro town.
Day 2: First Trekking Day – Sharna Zampa to Thangthangkha
Today marks the beginning of your Himalayan adventure. Since the trek covers 17 kilometers and takes about 6 hours, you will start early and transfer to Sharna Zampa, the official trailhead. After breakfast, begin trekking along forested paths and through a military checkpoint, where you must present your trekking permit (which we will arrange in advance). Much of the trail follows the Paro Chhu River, offering beautiful river views throughout the ascent. By late afternoon, you’ll reach Thangthangkha, where the altitude rises from 2,810 m to 3,610 m.
Day 3: Second Trekking Day – Thangthangkha to Jangothang
As you continue deeper into the valley, the landscape gradually opens up, revealing spectacular views of towering Himalayan peaks. Around midday, you will stop at a yak herders’ camp for lunch, where you may have the chance to interact with local herders. The trail then climbs steadily to Jangothang (4,040 m). On arrival, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of Mount Jomolhari and Jichu Drake. Today’s trek covers 19 kilometers and takes approximately 6 hours.
Day 4: Rest Day and Short Hikes Around Jangothang
After trekking nearly 40 kilometers in just two days, today is dedicated to rest and acclimatization. Nevertheless, you may choose to take short hikes around the campsite to fully appreciate the surrounding natural beauty. Scenic lakes, grazing yaks, and pristine mountainscapes provide perfect opportunities to relax, explore, and recharge.
Day 5: Third Trekking Day – Jangothang to Lingshi
After a restorative break, your trek resumes with a steady ascent toward the Nyile La Pass (4,890 m). Once over the pass, the trail descends into the expansive Lingshi Basin (3,800 m). Along the way, you will pass traditional yak-hair tents used by nomadic herders, who move between pastures depending on the season. As you approach your campsite near Lingshi Dzong, you will enjoy striking views of Mount Tsering Kang. This day involves an 18-kilometer trek lasting around 6 hours.
Day 6: Fourth and Toughest Trekking Day – Lingshi to Shodu
Today’s trek is the most demanding section of your journey. After an early start, you will climb steadily toward Yele La Pass (4,930 m), the highest point of the entire route. Upon crossing the pass, the trail descends toward Shodu (4,080 m). Along the way, you will be rewarded with views of Khedo Tsho Lake, a serene high-altitude jewel. This long but rewarding day spans 22 kilometers and may take up to 9 hours.
Day 7: Fifth Trekking Day – Shodu to Barshong
Compared to yesterday, today’s trail feels more relaxed and scenic. You will continue descending through rhododendron forests until you reach Barshong (3,700 m). The distance is only 14 kilometers, requiring roughly 4 hours of trekking. Upon arrival, you can spend time exploring the ruins of Barshong Dzong, which add historical charm to the landscape.
Day 8: Sixth Trekking Day – Barshong to Dolam Kencho (Thimphu Chhu Valley)
Today, the trail meanders alongside the beautiful Thimphu Chhu River, allowing you to enjoy lush vegetation and peaceful river views. The route maintains a gentle elevation around 3,600 m, making the 15-kilometer trek relatively easy. It typically takes about 5 hours to reach the campsite.
Day 9: Final Trekking Day – Dolam Kencho to Dodena and Drive to Thimphu
Your final trekking day takes you down the valley toward Dodena, where your vehicle will be waiting. From here, you will drive directly to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital. After checking into your hotel, you can relax and enjoy the rest of the evening at leisure.
Day 10: Thimphu Sightseeing and Drive to Paro
After breakfast, begin your cultural tour of Thimphu. You will visit the National Memorial Chorten, a revered monument built in honor of Bhutan’s Third King, and then explore the Textile Museum, which showcases Bhutanese weaving traditions. Following lunch, learn about local healing practices at the Institute of Traditional Medicine. Later in the afternoon, you will drive back to Paro for the night.
Day 11: Hike to Paro Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest Monastery)
This morning, embark on a rewarding hike to Taktsang Monastery, Bhutan’s most iconic site. The ascent typically takes about 2.5 hours, with a rest stop available at a viewpoint café halfway up. Once you reach the monastery clinging dramatically to the cliffside, you’ll have time to explore and soak in the spiritual atmosphere.
