Held from September 21 to September 23, 2026, the Thimphu festival is one of Bhutan’s largest and most vibrant religious festivals, celebrated every autumn in the courtyard of Tashichhodzong. The event traces its origins to the 17th century, when it was initiated by the 4th Desi, Gyalse Tenzin Rabgye, to honor Ugyen Rinpoche, the saint who introduced Buddhism to Bhutan.

We will provide you with local Bhutanese dress to wear for a day. You do not have to pay anything to wear Bhutanese dress for a day. If you want to buy a Bhutanese dress then its available in the market. Cost for male dress is about US$30 to US$50 for machine woven dress while hand woven dress will cost around US$700. Bhutanese female dress cost the same.

Thimphu tsechu itinerary

Day 1: ARRIVE PARO – THIMPHU

Our representative will greet you at the Paro airport exit after customs formalities. Shortly afterward, enjoy lunch before beginning your sightseeing around Paro. To begin, explore the Ta Dzong Museum; then continue to Rinpung Dzong, where you can admire the remarkable painting of the great saint Milarepa. Later in the afternoon, take a scenic drive to the capital, Thimphu (1.5 hours), following the serene Pachu River. Before dinner, your guide will also provide a brief orientation on Bhutanese etiquette. Overnight in Thimphu.

Day 2: THIMPHU

In the morning, start with a drive to Tashichhodzong to witness the vibrant Thimphu Festival. Throughout the festivities, you will encounter locals in their finest traditional attire, many of whom have walked long distances to join the celebration.

Day 3: THIMPHU

As you continue your cultural immersion, begin the day with visits to the 12th-century Changangkha Temple and the National Memorial Chorten, which beautifully illustrates Buddhist beliefs through detailed paintings and statues. Later, return to Tashichhodzong to once again experience the colorful festival events.

Day 4: THIMPHU – PUNAKHA

This morning, your journey leads you over the Dochu-La Pass (3,100 meters), which offers breathtaking views of Himalayan peaks on clear days. From the pass, descend into the warm and peaceful Punakha Valley (approximately 3 hours). Upon arrival, explore Punakha Dzong, the “Palace of Great Happiness,” built in 1637 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the unifier of Bhutan. After lunch, take a pleasant walk to Chimi Lhakhang, the temple dedicated to Drukpa Kuenley, also known as the Divine Madman.

Day 5: PUNAKHA – THIMPHU – PARO

To begin the day, drive to Yabesa Village and hike through lush rice fields to Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Chorten, built by Her Majesty the Queen Mother, Ashi Tshering Yangdon Wangchuk. Afterward, return to Thimphu to visit the National Library, which houses ancient scriptures dating back to the 8th century, as well as the Folk Heritage Museum, featuring a reconstructed traditional Bhutanese farmhouse. Later, continue your drive to Paro and check into your hotel upon arrival.

Day 6: PARO

After breakfast, embark on a hike to the iconic Taktsang Monastery. The broad trail climbs steadily and takes about two hours, rising nearly a kilometer above the Paro Valley floor. For guests who prefer an alternative, horses can be arranged up to the viewpoint. In the afternoon, visit the nearly restored Drukgyel Dzong. While returning to Paro, stop at additional viewpoints and cultural sites around the valley. Overnight in Paro.

Day 7: DEPART PARO

Finally, enjoy breakfast at the hotel before transferring to Paro Airport for your onward journey.
